Hannibal takes place seven years after The Silence of the Lambs, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, the murderer and Cannibal who escaped from authorities seven years earlier, still eludes the FBI. The Special Agent Clarice Starling, who met with Lecter during his incarceration seeking help to capture the assassin in series Buffalo Bill, is in charge of the search for Lecter. To convince the directors of the FBI that Starling should be dismissed, their nemesis in the Department of Justice of the United States, Paul Krendler, reported that there is an inappropriate relationship between Starling and Lecter. Once a private reward is offered by the only living victim of Hannibal, the disfigured, wealthy and molester of children Mason Verger, Krendler to make suffer to Starling, Lecter so out of retirement for comfort. For the moment, she is not farewell simply to help catch Lecter, so thus Krendler gets done with the reward.

Years earlier, Lecter persuaded Verger cut his own face, under the influence of drugs, and feed some dogs with her, all this before breaking her neck. As revenge Verger seeks to mutilate Lecter, leaving pigs specially bred and trained to feed him.

Lecter is discovered in Florence, Italy, where calls himself Dr. Fell. The Commissioner of police of Florence, Rinaldo Pazzi, who discovered the true identity of the Dr. Fell, gets in contact with Verger and planned the capture of Lecter. Pazzi meets with a group of independent workers, paid by Verger, to try to catch Lecter. During this time, Starling is also on the trail of Lecter, and also see which is in Florence. Kendler blames Starling in a message appearing in international newspapers warning Lecter is in danger, although it was actually the same Kendler who published it to commit to Starling and do they fired it from the FBI. Lecter discovers the plan of Pazzi and its association with Mason Verger, and as a result, kills it choking it with out intestines. Hannibal returned to Washington to watch (without homicidal intent) Starling upon hearing of his departure from the FBI.

When Lecter comes to the United States, kills a Hunter and gut it. However, shortly afterwards, employees of Verger capture him; Starling is witness to the abduction and reported it to the FBI. However they doubted Starling and make only a brief check to Verger farm, without finding a trace of Lecter. Despite all Starling infiltrates the farm with the intention of saving to Lecter, however, in the process they shoot him two darts filled with a powerful narcotic. Lecter, now free, burden at Clarice away from pigs. Verger is killed by his abused sister Margot, then that Lecter told him to do it and that he would take the blame for the death.

In an isolated Beach House that he had rented, Lecter begins to brainwash you to Starling with a mixture of psychotherapy and manipulation, in an attempt to transform it into her deceased sister Mischa. Kendler, captures Lecter to Starling face their fears, and serves the cooked brains of Kendler Starling, which is under the effects of drugs. After dinner, Starling and Lecter talk about the failed attempt to transform it. Realizing the pain and embarrassment that it caused his life in the FBI, Starling seduces Lecter and disappears with it. Three years later, the couple is sight in Buenos Aires, Argentina coming out of opera by Lecter's old nurse, Barney. This leaves the country forever by fear to Lecter
